چکیده

We present new determinations of the blue to red supergiant ratio (B/R) in young open clusters at various metallicities. For this purpose, we examine the HR diagrams of 45 clusters in the Galaxy and of 4 clusters in the Magellanic Clouds. The identification of supergiants is based on spectroscopic measurements (with photometric counts to check the results). The new counts confirm the increase of the B/R ratio when the metallicity increases with the following normalized relation : B/R (B/R)⊙ = 0.05 ·e 3 Z Z⊙ , where Z⊙ = 0.02 and (B/R)⊙ is the value of B/R at Z⊙ which depends on the definition of B and R and on the age interval considered (e.g. for spectroscopic counts including clusters with log age between 6.8 and 7.5, (B/R)⊙ = 3 when B includes O, B and A supergiants).

Evolution of massive stars with rotation and mass loss

Rotation appears as a dominant effect in massive star evolution. It largely affects all the model outputs: inner structure, tracks, lifetimes, isochrones, surface compositions, blue to red supergiant ratios, etc. At lower metallicities, the effects of rotational mixing are larger; also, more stars may reach critical velocity, even if the initial distribution of rotational velocities is the same.

Resolving Extragalactic Star Clusters with HST/ACS

With HST, colour-magnitude diagrams (CMDs) can be obtained for young star clusters well beyond the Local Group. Such data can help constrain cluster ages and metallicities, and also provide a reference against which intermediateand high mass stellar models can be compared. Here, CMDs are presented for two massive (> 105M⊙) clusters and compared with Padua and Geneva isochrones. The problem of t...

Discovery of a Young Massive Stellar Cluster near Hess J1813-178

We present the serendipitous discovery of a young stellar cluster in the Galactic disk at l=12. Using Keck/NIRSPEC, we obtained high– and low–resolution spectroscopy of several stars in the cluster, and we identified one red supergiant and two blue supergiants. The radial velocity of the red supergiant provides a kinematic cluster distance of 4.7±0.4 kpc, implying luminosities of the stars cons...

Globular Cluster Populations : Signatures and Implications

The formation of populous secondary star cluster systems is a widespread phenomenon in mergers of gas-rich galaxies. Many, if not most, of those clusters are massive and compact enough to be young globular clusters (GCs). GC systems in most E/S0 galaxies feature bimodal color distributions with a fairly universal blue peak similar to the blue peak of halo GCs in the Milky Way (MW) and M31, and ...
